Prehistoric Food and CraftThis class is a great expansion of previous wild foraging classes. In this class we will be creating: primitive nets and containers for carrying and harvesting; bowls and utensils for cooking and eating; mud ovens and pits for cooking in; and practicing archery, fishing, throwing sticks, atlatl's and more. Some kids might choose to harvest and cook dinosaur beans, while others might weave a bag to carry the beans in! Some kids might choose to go fishing, while others create bowls for us to make soup in! Most of our wild foods will be ingredients for delicious treats like pizzas, sorbets, cakes, and more.
Let's delve into wild foraging and native plants and spend our day creating and feasting! This class is a field trip class in that we meet in various locations around Monroe County each time, getting to experience the abundance and beauty of many ecologies of Southern Indiana! We will be creating, crafting, cooking and sharing food or food related items, all things that have nourished and sustained people around the world for eons. We also will be learning about the ethics of foraging and caretaking the landscapes we get to enjoy, together practicing taking care of one another and the earth at the same time. Local wild foraging and its related activities creates a sense of belonging and place that gives confidence and empowerment to all who join in the fun. Stories, games, exploration including creek play and finding lots of other natural mysteries all included in the fun! *Potential for carpooling available. Every attempt to work with dietary considerations will be made!

In this special class series, we are going to celebrate and highlight some of the gold of Winter Solstice, focusing on FIRE and nature inspired GIFTS.

Our unique Soulcraft approach is a combination of tools, both ancient and modern, used to slow us down and connect to the soul- the soul of ourselves, and of the world around us. It honors nature and mystery and is practical and transformational. There might be laughter, there might be tears. It might incorporate music, fire, water, carving, or flowers. It gives us a sense of deep belonging, revivifies our lives, and allows us to create our own story and cool stuff along the way.
WinterCOunt WorkshopWintercount is a deeply soulful and connective practice done in Winter, and around the New Year. Join us for a cozy time in the studio by the woodstove, learning a New Year's tradition that is actually extremely valuable and beautiful!

Fermentation Festival!Join us for a multi-workshop celebration of food preservation through fermentation and more!
Join us at the Soulcraft Fermentation Festival 2024, where you can explore a lively TASTINGS and exciting workshops, from sour pickles and salty koji to indulgent wild meads and tangy sauerkrauts. Discover and celebrate the diversity and gut-goodness of fermented creations! Discover the ancient culinary art of fermentation, where the magic of microbes transforms ordinary ingredients into extraordinary flavors. Fermented foods are a diverse category of culinary delights that undergo a natural process of microbial transformation, resulting in enhanced taste, texture, and putative nutritional benefits. At the heart of this process lies the intricate dance between beneficial bacteria, yeasts, and molds, which not only preserve foods but also unlock a symphony of complex flavor compounds. Don't miss the opportunity to participate in a workshop, led by creatives in fermentation, all whom have been eating and fermenting for decades -including Jon Kulow of Seven Ridges Farm and ; Eric Schedler of Muddy Fork Bakery; and local forager and facilitator Monique Philpot of Soulcraft Bloomington. Dive into the world of fermented foods with the pungent umami goodness of koji to the rich depths of kimchi, each fermented creation offers a unique sensory experience. Explore the tangy crunch of sauerkraut, thought to be packed with probiotics, or indulge in deliciousness of wines and meads, where microbes lend their distinctive character to every sip. Explore the depths of soy sauce, where fermentation elevates humble soybeans into a savory condiment, or savor the complexity of wild fermented mushrooms and adding other wild foods and herbs to your ferments for extra nutrition and taste. Whether you're seeking bold flavors or nutritional benefits, fermented foods offer a tantalizing journey for the palate steeped in history and traditional knowledge. |

Animal ProtectorsThis 3 part series is dedicated to the wonderful diversity of animals we have in Bloomington! It is during the earliest transition from Late Winter to Spring, when creatures are waking up from hibernation, some are having young, some are starting to find mates and nesting spots and dens. Many migrating birds start to come back home, making it an exciting birding time! We will be creating bird houses, owl boxes, and bat boxes to take home to help out our local flying creatures. We will create feeding stations for various animals, to give them some extra energy for the last of Winter.
Along with studying and creating art about specific birds and animals of our area, we will take a field trip to Goose Pond to see the thousands of snow geese (sometimes up to 10,000 at one time!), coots, eagles, pelicans, and sandhill cranes. This is a jam packed session with lots of making and creating, learning, and TONS of FUN!!! We always intermix nature connection (it is our ultimate inspiration!), games, stories, songs, and fun into each class! Kids will leave with items to help the creatures of their own backyards, a deeper understanding of our wonderful wildlife, and the fulfilment of providing help for our non-human friends. We are thrilled to raise awareness and love of our local wildlife, and give back to them too! For kids 7 yrs old and up Class Dates: 3 Fridays, Feb. 23, Mar. 1, 8, 2024 9-2pm Cost: $130-$170 sliding scale register here! |
