Cranky out crazy actsThis class is always a big hit, and this year we are making it even crazier and more creative!
As usual we will have a wonderful story, told on a cranky -but this year there will be the addition of the story coming alive at different parts in the form of live circus acts. This might include rolo bolo, feather balancing, juggling, acrobatics, clowns, animals, puppets, and more! For newcomers, "what is a cranky" you ask? This is not a class about being cranky, or crabbie, or anything of the sort! A Cranky is a type of light show- a story on a scroll told through images or puppets or music, seen through a viewing window. Similar "moving picture" types of storytelling have been around for centuries, all around the world. The world of the Cranky is still being expanded today, with Cranky Festivals popping up across the world and new ideas being used all the time. |
|
Like usual, in this class we will decide on a story together and all come together to create a Cranky show with it. There are lots of different parts and pieces to the making of a Cranky Show, from drawing, coloring, creating shadow puppets, music, narrating, actually cranking the scroll, and so much more. There is a place in this class for anyone who wants to be a part of the creation of Soulcraft's now annual Winter Cranky Show-there are lots of 'on stage/in front of the audience' positions, and plenty of 'behind the scenes' positions too! The fun comes in creating a beautiful Storytelling Night together. At the end of the 12 weeks, we will get to show our Cranky!

Tales of Migration:
nomads, movement and shelter
People, birds, and animals have all migrated to different places in changing seasons throughout history. What causes this migration? Why do some stay and some choose to leave? Do birds or animals ever take things with them like humans do while migrating? How do they find shelter, food, or medicine while on the move? How do they know when they are home or are they like turtles, carrying home on their back all the time?
Join us on an adventure through time, exploring nomadic vs stationary life through the lens of humans, birds, and animals. We will get to create shelters for ourselves, along with helpful tools that humans have used for travel for thousands of years. We will learn from the birds and animals that migrate long distances, to see how they survive and make wherever they are a temporary home until they reach their final destination.
Along with building and creating there is always lots of playing games, exploring and adventuring!
This class meets for 11 weeks, from 9-2pm on Fridays, starting September 5 and ending November 14, and includes a short field trips, and one overnight and field trip to the Indiana Dunes National Park September 25-26.

*A note on our Sliding Scale Fees: We offer the sliding scale as a means of allowing you to self-scholarship, as needed. We leave it entirely up to you to select your point on the scale, and ask you to recognize that the true cost of running the program is approximately in the middle. We count on your integrity in selecting your rate: when you choose a higher amount, you are making it possible for someone of lesser means to pay a lower tuition. In this way, we are working together to help keep the program affordable.

Fun with HErps!
Herpetology Class: the study of amphibians and reptiles
Spring Peepers wake up all their friends and announce the end of Winter and early Spring already in late February and early March! Only a few weeks later the American Toads begin singing each night! They also wake up all the nature lovers and herpetologists, telling us a flurry of activity will be starting very soon! Salamanders, frogs, toads, turtles and more, start moving around and very quickly look for friends and mates to start new cycles of life. We'll start to see lots of tadpoles appearing and salamanders moving about, and toads mating like crazy!
This class is an in-depth study of the amazing bio-diversity we have in Monroe County, specifically the high numbers of amphibians and reptiles. We will study the ones that live in our area and learn their songs, behaviours, and habitats. We will see how many we can find and collect data on- do they seem healthy, what size are they, who are they, what habitat are they found in, and more! We will learn how to create healthy habitat for these important ecological indicator species. We will also have a number of field trips, meeting in different locations that host lots of these special creatures.
